¿CÓMO ELEGIR UN TOPPER?

HOW TO CHOOSE A TOPPER?

What is a topper?

It is normally used to complement a mattress, placing it on top of it to camouflage bad pressure points of the mattress on some parts of our body, an example of its use would be, for example, to extend the useful life of the mattress. We can also use it as a temperature balancer during our rest.

If we use it with a new mattress, what we do is enhance its comfort as long as we prefer to sleep on a good density.
Its interior is filled with latex or viscoelastic foam, which allows us to enjoy viscoelastic rest if combined with a mattress that does not have this component.

Its height is quite high, ranging from 5 to 10 cm, so it can be used as a temporary mattress, without combining it with any other mattress, for children or young people, although it is not very advisable to use it for long periods in this way.

The mattress support system is excellent thanks to its fastening points that allow a very good grip, so you don’t feel like it’s two separate units but rather one single resting unit.

It is very important to remember that our topper must have a good ventilation system that allows us to eliminate moisture and maintain good preservation.

Over time, the use of viscoelastic toppers has increased considerably, either to extend the life of our mattress or to complement it, but we warn that if used on a mattress with significant deficiencies or that is already old, the topper will accumulate these deficiencies and we will not be able to enjoy its qualities.

What are the advantages of using a topper?

  • The protection of the mattress and its shielding increases as it functions as a protector.
  • Comfort is enhanced, especially on harder mattresses, giving them an extra layer of adaptability and softness.
  • Extends the useful period of the mattress by camouflaging its weaknesses and thus prolonging the integrity of its qualities.
  • The level of hygiene increases considerably, as it also acts as a top cover that can be removed and washed if it gets dirty, thus preventing the mattress from getting dirty and poorly preserved.
  • The price is quite affordable and much cheaper than buying a new or high-performance mattress.

What care and maintenance does a topper need?

Knowing that we use it as a complement to our mattress and at the same time as protection, we will have to wash it often to preserve its characteristics and achieve long durability, as well as ensure it has excellent ventilation so that air enters and flows freely, refreshing the fibers.

This will prevent the mattress from becoming stained or dirty, but for this reason, we will have to maintain more constant hygiene.

Does a topper make you hot?

The answer is generally no. If we have a mattress that releases heat and we apply a viscoelastic topper on top, this can help to cool since it is not made of the same fabric and they are generally thermally neutral, meaning they do not release heat or cold.

That is, it not only does not release heat but can be used, besides enhancing qualities, as a solution for our mattress that causes a sensation of heat.

If the topper is latex, it is possible that it creates a slight sensation of heat for many people.

What firmness should I choose in a topper?

We have available two types of firmness, soft and medium. There is no optimal firmness for everyone since each user has their preferences and ways of sleeping. We advise that if the topper is going to be used only as an occasional bed, buy one with medium firmness since there will be nothing underneath to serve as padding.

If otherwise it will be combined with a mattress, here the person’s tastes come into play, if they like to sleep soft, we will choose a soft firmness and vice versa. If, on the contrary, we have a mattress that is already hard and what interests us is to soften it or have an extra layer of softness, then we will choose a soft topper and vice versa.

Can I extend the life of my mattress with a topper?

What the topper basically does is complement the mattress, enhancing its qualities or adding more.

The life of a mattress is approximately 10 years, and it is possible that a mattress used with a topper does not show the same deterioration as one used alone, or at least it camouflages it better, but the deficiencies will soon become visible and the topper will inherit them from the mattress, so we will not gain more useful life but rather waste the properties the topper would give us if used properly on a new mattress.
