The importance of the pillow for a good rest

Most of the times when we talk about our rest, we refer to the mattress, but we have to admit that the pillow is the perfect companion to our mattress to guarantee us the perfect rest.

Sleeping well involves several factors, choosing the mattress that best suits our firmness needs and selecting the right pillow for the posture in which we usually sleep. At Adara Home we already have an article about which mattress to choose and which one suits your needs.

However, choosing the perfect pillow is not an easy task; the range of pillows on the market is huge: feathers, memory foam, cervical pillows, gel, fiber...

The first thing we have to keep in mind when buying a new pillow is to know in which postures we sleep at night.

The goal is to protect one of the most delicate areas of our body, the nape, since it accumulates much of the tension during the day. Thanks to the pillow, we have to relax that part and avoid common neck pains upon waking.

Types of pillows:

  • Feather pillows: they adapt to all sleeping positions but produce heat and accumulate more dust mites.

  • Polyester or fiber pillows: very similar to feather ones, perhaps not as soft.

Fiber square pillow

  • Gel, memory foam or latex pillows: They perfectly adapt to the shape and weight of the head and neck, are more breathable; the only drawback is the firmness, usually it is hard to get used to these types of pillows, so we recommend choosing low or medium firmness, also depending on needs.

Recommendations when choosing our perfect pillow.

  • It is preferable to choose thin or slim pillows rather than wide ones, since the latter strain the neck more by tilting the back. Thin pillows follow the natural contour of the neck, keeping the dorsal spine axis straight.
  • The best sleeping position regardless of pillow type is on your side or back, the least recommended is face down as it usually alters the curvature of the spine and it is very likely you will wake up with neck pain.
  • Memory foam and latex pillows provide superior adaptability whether you sleep on your back or side. They are designed to relieve pressure in the neck area and upper back, thus promoting a correct anatomical position.
