Sleep and Migraine

Many times the migraine goes away after sleeping for a while.

Other times the headache starts while we are asleep; this usually happens from sleeping more or fewer hours than recommended.

migraine

There are many types of migraines; the most common usually goes away when lying down in a dark room without hearing any noise.

There are others that start while we are sleeping, when we are in the sleep phase called REM. We feel the headache, but most of the time we are unable to wake up to take a painkiller, and when you get up the pain is already very strong and then you need more painkillers.

We usually find 2 types of migraines, with aura and without aura.

Migraines with aura are distinguished by being preceded by some visual alteration, such as seeing bright spots, luminous lines, or black spots in the visual field; this is like a warning that the migraine is coming.

The characteristics of migraines are:

They can last between 2 and 72 hours.

They are usually unilateral, meaning the pain only affects one side of the head.

The intensity is usually variable, from moderate to severe.

They are almost always accompanied by vomiting, nausea, photophobia (light intolerance), or phonophobia (noise intolerance).

There are also migraines caused by some type of smell, but these are not frequent, although it is known that many people also suffer from them.

It is estimated that about 12% of the world population suffers from migraines.
